Sports injuries

From injury to a way forward.

Whether your goal is a walk, the gym or competitive sport, hip and knee pain should not leave you guessing. Mr Shah offers consultations for hip and knee sports problems, and performs meniscectomy, meniscal repair and ACL reconstruction for suitable knee injuries.

What knee sports injuries can you help with?

Meniscal tears can cause pain, swelling, catching or locking. ACL injuries can make the knee feel unstable when you twist or change direction. Mr Shah sees the full range of knee problems, including collateral ligament injuries and patellofemoral problems around the kneecap. He performs meniscectomy, meniscal repair and ACL reconstruction. If your knee needs a procedure outside his own practice, he can help you connect with the right colleague for that care.

How can a meniscal tear be treated?

Rehabilitation can reduce pain and rebuild movement and strength. If surgery is appropriate, Mr Shah performs meniscal repair to preserve a suitable torn meniscus, or meniscectomy to remove a damaged fragment. The aim is a more comfortable, dependable knee while preserving useful meniscal tissue where possible.

Could ACL reconstruction help me?

An ACL injury does not automatically mean an operation. Physiotherapy helps rebuild strength, balance and control. If instability is still holding you back, ACL reconstruction may help restore stability, with rehabilitation an important part of getting back to sport.

What can cause hip or groin pain during sport?

Muscle and tendon strains, overload around the outside of the hip, labral tears and hip impingement can all be part of the picture. The labrum is a ring of cartilage around the hip socket. Hip impingement means the shape of the joint causes contact that can irritate nearby tissue during movement. We will work out where your pain is coming from rather than assume it is arthritis.

Can I see Mr Shah about a hip sports injury?

A consultation is a useful first step for hip or groin symptoms during sport. Mr Shah can assess your symptoms and help you understand the likely cause. If your hip needs specialist sports treatment, he can guide you to the right colleague, so you have a clear next step. He does not perform hip arthroscopy or labral repair.

Will I need a scan or surgery?

Your history and examination come first. X-rays or an MRI can help answer a specific question about the joint or soft tissues. Many injuries can be treated without surgery. The aim is to choose a useful next step, not simply an operation.

When can I return to sport?

Returning safely means rebuilding movement, strength and confidence, then progressing towards the demands of your sport. Your injury, treatment and progress with rehabilitation shape the plan. We will work towards your goals without promising a fixed date.
