Your first appointment
We start with what is bothering you, how it affects your life and what you hope to get back to. Mr Shah will discuss your symptoms, examine the joint and review any available imaging. You can ask questions and take time to consider the options. An appointment does not commit you to an operation.
What to bring
- A list of your medicines, allergies and relevant medical conditions.
- Any referral letter, previous clinic letters or scan reports you already have. If images were taken elsewhere, tell the booking team so they can advise how to make them available.
- Your insurer’s details and authorisation reference, if you are using medical insurance.
- Your main questions, and a note of what makes the pain better or worse.
- You are welcome to bring someone with you if that would help.
What happens next?
You may need an X-ray or other tests before a decision can be made. Treatment might include exercise, physiotherapy, medicines, an injection or surgery. Mr Shah will explain the possible benefits, risks and alternatives, and agree the next step with you.
Paying for your care
Self-pay
You can arrange a private consultation without medical insurance. Ask your chosen hospital for a quote and how payment is arranged. If surgery or an injection is recommended, request a written quote before deciding.
Check what the quote includes: hospital charges, surgeon and anaesthetist fees, tests, implants, physiotherapy and follow-up. Ask which items, extra appointments or complications are excluded.
Using medical insurance
Check your cover and obtain any required referral or authorisation before the appointment. Tell the booking team which insurer you use and provide your authorisation reference. Check your excess, benefit limits and whether consultations, scans, injections, surgery and follow-up are covered.
Procedure codes can help your insurer identify the planned treatment, but a code does not confirm cover. Use the code supplied for your own treatment and check the insurer’s decision before proceeding.
